The story began with the belief that you don’t need to trade off clean beauty for haircare that performs. James’ passion for haircare is unmatched, proven by his unwavering commitment to formulate clean haircare products that hydrate like nothing else. He wanted people to feel great about their hair everyday – not just great because their hair looked amazing, but their hair was truly healthy, hydrated and manageable.

MASAMI found the answer in the rich seas of north-eastern Japan, where the three waters of the world embrace, and nature in all her beauty and diversity flourishes. Here in the majestic fields of green swaying Wakame seaweed, nature has seen fit to gift us one of her great, nutrient-rich treasures. A small, miraculous ocean botanical known as Mekabu. Harvested for centuries by Japanese farmers for its health-giving properties, this marine miracle inspired MASAMI. For the ultimate in botanically hydrated hair.

Botanically hydrating Mekabu, beneath the Wakame leaf, is filled with ocean vitamins and minerals to leave your hair healthy, glossy and gorgeous. All of MASAMI’s products are infused with fresh Mekabu powder, harvested annually from NE Japan, sourced from a family owned seaweed company.

About Mekabu – MASAMI’S Super Hydrating Ocean Botanical 

Mekabu is an ocean botanical that grows in the depths of the ocean off the northeast coast of Japan. It is a nutrient-rich superfood full of minerals, algae and vitamins that, in addition to being edible, provides incredible hydration to reawaken your hair. Ancient Japanese dynasties have been consuming it and using it to cleanse their hair for centuries. A part of the wakame seaweed, Mekabu contains fucoidan, which makes hair healthy, hydrated, shiny and beautiful. Mekabu powder acts like a sponge in hair products, capturing water and delivering the ultimate in botanically hydrated hair.

MASAMI, or “truly beautiful” is a reflection of their commitment to bring you the best, most efficacious haircare products and dedication to protecting the natural ocean habitats from which Mekabu is harvested. The team at The MASAMI INSTITUTE in the Iwate Prefecture of Northeast Japan work with the local fisherman and coastline preservation groups to research, monitor, and document each season’s growth. The goal is ultimately to preserve and restore the fragile ocean ecosystem, and to educate the world about the importance of maintaining balance in our world.

Masahiro Sasaki, Chairman of The MASAMI INSTITUTE, works closely with Mr. Kazuya Yoshino, Managing Director of The MASAMI INSTITUTE, who moved from Tokyo to Otsuchi in 2011 to help with earthquake and tsunami recovery efforts by starting The Otsuchi Recovery Shashiko Project. Where they provided women, who had lost their homes and workplaces in the disaster with work and a place to feel they belong. Since then he has been championing the restoration of the ocean and botanicals through education and documentation.
