LITTLE URCHIN began one day when a father found his daughter caked in chemical-smelling sunscreen after attending day-care. Knowing just enough about the chemicals in sunscreen to know he didn’t want her wearing it, the father began a six-month formulation journey using only rich essential oils and nature’s most potent skin-nourishing ingredients. After developing the formula as far as he could, he engaged the help of one of Australia’s leading formulators to perfect the product and ensure its integrity.

LITTLE URCHIN is also a story inspired by nature. Like humans, sea urchins are sensitive to light and chemicals. In fact, these clever little fellows have evolved to create their own natural sunscreen to protect their young from the sun’s harsh rays. While no specific reef safe tests or certifications have been developed for sunscreens, studies indicate that none of the ingredients in LITTLE URCHIN sunscreen are harmful to coral.

Zinc oxide, the key ingredient in LITTLE URCHIN non-toxic sunscreens, has been used for centuries in many skin-care products and toothpastes. Studies show that this mineral does not harm coral, unlike oxybenzone and certain ingredients in other sunscreens. Zinc oxide is a powdered mineral that does not dissolve in seawater. Instead, it settles eventually to the seafloor, like silt, and becomes buried in sediment. The other ingredients in LITTLE URCHIN sunscreens are biodegradable and safe for any ecosystem.
