True passion always exists long before we see it. I’m not talking about intimate passion with another person tainted with lust. I’m talking about true passion, faith and fulfilment that goes far beyond the fact that it makes you feel good. It comes from deep within your soul. It’s this type of true passion that I’ve always had for skincare and beauty. Not in vanity, but as a belief and personal contentment in taking care of one’s physical self as a means of portraying and nurturing your soul.
For me, it started when I was just a very young girl, although it is only now as a more experienced and mature adult that I came to recognise this as my passion. I had always researched and used the best quality skincare I could afford but then 18 years ago I discovered and started using organic skincare. This was well before the emergence of the “Indie Beauty” brand, my choices were so minimal. I had to search long and hard, all over the world in fact, seeking pure, clean organic skincare.
I was, and still am a loyal devotee to a number of brands, because my skin responded, and I adored the benefits of their precious ingredients. I read every article, textbook and scientific paper I could find in my quest to understanding these oils, butters, extracts, essential oils, hydrosols etc and how they could benefit my skin. Why did they work? How did each ingredient support one another in the formulation? Then there was the beautiful stories of their natural origins. It wasn’t until I undertook formal studies in organic skincare formulation that I truly appreciated and respected the incredible talent and remarkable understanding of botanicals that is required to become an Organic Skincare Formulator.
Often organic brands are founded on a love of natural ingredients, solving a problem or addressing a specific skin condition, in some cases that of the formulator themselves. Regardless of what ignites their inception, the driving force behind these brands is the genuine belief and dedication to nature and creating a formulation that is packed full of potent botanicals that work. It is out of my passion for this industry and the work of these remarkably talented independent scientists and formulators that The NATIVES Co. is born.
With our lives and the planet in seeming crisis we are more and more returning to nature for answers and healing. The idea of a more organic and sustainable lifestyle rings true with so many of us now, I believe because it connects so profoundly with our own origins in nature and innate connection to the earth. Science and technology are giving us greater ability than we have ever had to understand, nurture and harness the benefits of nature in an earth sensitive and holistic manner. I believe the question is no longer “why should I use organic and natural skincare” but rather “why am I not?”.
