Naturally Sustainable
Natural Sea Sponges possess remarkable powers of regeneration. Their natural reproductive cycles ensure they can re-grow lost parts and pieces broken off by water currents. They can also settle in another location and re-grow into a clone of the parent sponge.
The natural sea sponge is a renewable resource from the sea which has been harvested for over 150yrs. The Honeycomb sea sponge is found in the Mediterranean Sea in depths of 15-60 meters. Wild harvest divers use specific techniques to collect the sea sponges, carefully preserving the base (roots) of the sponge, ensuring the sponge has the ability to regenerate and re-grow back to its original form. If not harvested, sea sponges have a life span of approximately 10 years, harvesting allows for re-generation and extended life.
Sea Sponge populations are harvested carefully to ensure minimal disruption to the harvest area and to assist and promote regeneration of the sea sponges for future harvest and collection. It is in our best interests to ensure the long-term sustainability of sea sponges in their natural environment, and for this reason we promote and support only sustainable harvest and collection methods. To ensure sustainable harvesting practices we only source Honeycomb sea sponges from suppliers that can provide a Certificate of Origin and a Veterinary Certificate issued by the Greek state authority.
Due to Australia’s strict quarantine laws importation of raw and untreated natural sea sponges is prohibited. Our Mediterranean Honeycomb sea sponges have been cleaned and treated prior to importation. This in no way limits or changes the effectiveness of the sea sponge, but it does protect our precious Australian eco-system.
Sea sponges are produced in nature. They are delicate and may contain inherent natural variations and flaws that are not considered faults. To protect the durability and prolong the life of your sea sponge we recommend you care for your Honeycomb sea sponge using the information provided in our care section. The durability of your sea sponge will naturally degrade with use. Once your sea sponge is too fragile for use in the shower it can be returned to the earth in your compost or garden waste.
