Naturally Sustainable

Natural Sea Sponges possess remarkable powers of regeneration. Their natural reproductive cycles ensure they can re-grow lost parts and pieces broken off by water currents. They can also settle in another location and re-grow into a clone of the parent sponge.

The natural sea sponge is a renewable resource from the sea which has been harvested for over 150yrs. The Honeycomb sea sponge is found in the Mediterranean Sea in depths of 15-60 meters. Wild harvest divers use specific techniques to collect the sea sponges, carefully preserving the base (roots) of the sponge, ensuring the sponge has the ability to regenerate and re-grow back to its original form. If not harvested, sea sponges have a life span of approximately 10 years, harvesting allows for re-generation and extended life.

Sea Sponge populations are harvested carefully to ensure minimal disruption to the harvest area and to assist and promote regeneration of the sea sponges for future harvest and collection. It is in our best interests to ensure the long-term sustainability of sea sponges in their natural environment, and for this reason we promote and support only sustainable harvest and collection methods. To ensure sustainable harvesting practices we only source Honeycomb sea sponges from suppliers that can provide a Certificate of Origin and a Veterinary Certificate issued by the Greek state authority.

Due to Australia’s strict quarantine laws importation of raw and untreated natural sea sponges is prohibited. Our Mediterranean Honeycomb sea sponges have been cleaned and treated prior to importation. This in no way limits or changes the effectiveness of the sea sponge, but it does protect our precious Australian eco-system.

Sea sponges are produced in nature. They are delicate and may contain inherent natural variations and flaws that are not considered faults. To protect the durability and prolong the life of your sea sponge we recommend you care for your Honeycomb sea sponge using the information provided in our care section. The durability of your sea sponge will naturally degrade with use. Once your sea sponge is too fragile for use in the shower it can be returned to the earth in your compost or garden waste.

How to Care for your Sea Sponge:

Your sea sponge is a delicate natural material. Ensure you care for it well and limit handling when dry as this can lead to cracks in the fibres. Soak well and use when thoroughly wet through only.

After Every Use: Rinse the sea sponge in clean water to remove any residual product. Makeup pigments wash out easily, a little soap can be used for more stubborn stains. Squeeze (do not wring) out excess water into a towel, removing as much water as possible. Leave in a well ventilated area to air dry, ready for next use.

Once a month: soak your sea sponge in a cup of warm water with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. This will help clean the sponge and maintain it’s structure.

The edges of your sea sponge may fray with use, shedding of loose fibres/ fragments can be expected under normal use, this is not considered a fault. It’s ok to trim any little frayed edges with scissors to freshen and help your sea sponge last longer.

Daily maintenance and good hygiene will ensure your sea sponge stays clean and in good condition. Mildew and mould growth are an indicator that you are not drying your sponge adequately. If your sea sponge hasn’t been well dried between use or you are concerned about bacteria growth, you can disinfect your sponge by soaking in a cup a warm water with several drops of tea tree essential oil and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

Things to Avoid: boiling water, dryers, microwaves or bleach. This will drastically change the structure of your sponge.

Care Instructions

Care Instructions

To maximize the effectiveness and longevity of a natural honeycomb sea sponge it is essential to hydrate it properly before use. Begin by thoroughly soaking the sponge in water, ensuring it is completely drenched through. This step is crucial as it helps prevent breakage and shedding of the sponge fibres. Failure to properly hydrate the sponge can make it brittle and susceptible to breakage, particularly within their unique internal network. Additionally, exposure to harsh chemicals or extreme temperatures can weaken the sponge fibres, causing them to break.

It is important to treat your sea sponge with care to maintain their integrity and longevity. Hydrate them properly and avoid exposing them to harmful conditions. Once saturated, gently squeeze out any excess water. When using the sponge, apply your natural cleanser or body wash directly onto the moistened sponge and lather onto the skin in gentle circular motions. Rinse thoroughly after use, gently squeeze out excess water into a towel. Do not wring or pull at the sea sponge. Allow the sponge to air dry completely in a well-ventilated area. Regularly rinsing and allowing it to dry thoroughly will help maintain its softness and extend its lifespan.
