In short, YES. Most beauty blogs will tell you to cut down on your washes because it’s better for your hair. And it is. Less shampoo and less styling means less daily damage to your gorgeous locks. However, we’re also into shower caps for another reason. We’re busy! If we can protect blowouts on amazing hair days and save a ton of getting ready time? Yes, please. Using a shower cap is literally like giving you more hours in your day.
SHHHOWERCAP took a look at the world’s existing shower caps and realized that as much as we needed them, they were actually far from great. They certainly didn’t make women feel great. Which is just ridiculous. They set out to create a version that would make women feel amazing and evaluated it for both form and function. It wasn’t enough for SHHHOWERCAP to look good, it had to work better, too.
They listened in focus groups spending endless hours asking women with different hairstyles and lengths and identified pretty much every problem that existed with what is currently on the market and set about fixing them.

In 2013 Jackie- Founder of SHHHOWERCAP, wanted something that didn’t exist, and so she set out to create it.
Like most women, Jackie wasn’t washing her hair every day. Some days it was because she was trying to stretch another day out of a blowout, other days she simply didn’t have time to wash and style before running to an early morning meeting. She also knew from blogs and magazines that it was healthiest to cut down on shampoos and avoid heat styling as much as possible. Basically, it was just easier and she believed better not to wash her hair every day.
However, the practicality of not washing was trickier than it sounds. Jackie had a shower cap, just like yours, ugly, stretched and mouldy. A shower cap she hated….
“It didn’t work well and I felt like it was sacrifice every single time I put it on. So, I chose instead to put my hair in a top knot and dance around the shower hoping that my hair didn’t get wet. As we all know if you’ve tried it — this is a faulty solution. I was tired of the dance. So, I decided to look for a new shower cap. I wanted an upgrade.”
Jackie did some research, on google of course. What she found was the catalyst for her reinvention. Her internet search for “cool shower cap” “best shower cap” and “fashionable shower cap” came back with a ton of horrible options! All frilly bows, cheesy prints, satin ruffles, sequins, bedazzling, you name it. It was so bad. Don’t forget the cheap plastic “ironic” category of plastic frogs, strawberries, and ice cream cones. Most of all, they all had that tacky Miss Muffet shape. Nothing you would consider to fit the modern woman’s taste. Yet, almost every woman Jackie knew had a need for a shower cap.
“Why had no one reimagined this outdated beauty necessity?! Why were we all settling for an experience that made us feel less than? I knew I could do it better. I needed to do better.”
Over the next year, Jackie obsessively set out on the journey to make her invention into a reality. Learning everything she could about waterproofing technologies and manufacturing, sourcing fabrics and testing them. She pulled reference and sketched designs, asked friends and friends of friends who worked in fashion if they knew anything or anyone that could help her. Running back and forth to New York City’s Garment District iterating different shapes, sizes, and folds until everything was a perfect balance of both form and function.
During this time Jackie made her life one big focus group…
“I’d speak to every single person I met about their hair washing habits Chances are if you met me during those development years, I’d open our conversation with “Random question. Do you wash your hair every day?” It’s quite an icebreaker. I’d follow up and ask how you felt about shower caps. If you used one and if you didn’t — why not?”
This is when Jackie learned all of the specific things that turned women off from using them altogether. Everyone had their own annoyance with the shower caps that existed. Even if they were using one regularly. Especially if they were! It was obvious that “chic” was just the tip of the iceberg because a ton of functionality issues needed fixing as well. Not one person felt good wearing them. Especially offensive in these personal moments in the nude when we should all feel like our best selves.
Once Jackie felt she had a product that addressed every major issue she’d heard in these conversations, she couldn’t wait to put it out into the world. Fast Company wrote this article, “Reinventing the Shower Cap For The Modern Woman” the day after the site went live. It started the engine, that hasn’t stopped since.
SHHHOWERCAP is a brand run by hardworking women with a strong point of view on everything from politics to mascara. Jackie is the proud founder delivering on her original goal — to reinvent the shower cap. And, an even bigger one — to inspire women launching their new ideas into the world.
