A guide to Glowing Skin

How to Supercharge your Beauty Mask at Home

Boost your glow with these easy-at home beauty mask DIY tips

I’m obsessed with DIY masks and always have been. But take STOCK! As I undertook my studies, I soon learned that I could be doing more harm than good and by using these at home kitchen ingredients… lemon juice? I was actually exacerbating inflammation!

The good news for a skincare junkie like myself is that there are some amazing everyday superfoods that can boost and supercharge the efficacy of expertly formulated powered masks. Through researching all-natural and easily accessible ingredients I uncovered the holy grail of creating at home spa-like masks that give your skin life!  Better still, the expert formulators and brand founders advocate and promote the use of these ingredients with their glorious power masks. So let’s look at some DIY mask hacks for glowing skin at home.

Superfood No 1: HONEY

This natural superfood is brimming with amazing skin-loving properties and there isn’t a skin type out there that will not benefit from a dose of all-natural organic honey. Revered as one of nature’s most potent skin remedies honey is a natural humectant (and readily used in organic skincare), working to draw moisture into the skin, keeping the skin hydrated but not oily. Honey is also supercharged with antibacterial and antiseptic properties, making it ideal for oily and acne-prone skin.

There are several types of honey you can buy at your local supermarket; we recommend either raw organic honey or pure New Zealand Manuka Honey- that is bottled straight from the hive. Both these types of honey are non-processed and decadent in texture, some can contain small pieces of debris from the honeycomb. Rich in B Vitamins, amino acids, minerals including calcium and copper and antioxidants that help to protect, repair and promote healthy and strong skin. Pro tip: to ensure the full spectrum of nutrients are bioavailable the honey should not be heated.

Honey is an amazing skin cleanser, making it an ideal additive to a powder mask. It’s gentle and nourishing while purifying the skin, making it great for sensitive and compromised skin.

Flower & Spice Beauty Masquerade Customisable Clay Treatment is a potent blend of detoxifying and stimulating clays whisking away dullness. Hibiscus improves skin elasticity and unifies the tone of the skin, anti-inflammatory turmeric and the star ingredient panax ginseng deliver powerful anti-ageing benefits. This indulgent blend is formulated to be customised. We adore this mask! It can be used with purified water to cleanse and detoxify, but we love the indulgent texture and toning effect when blended equal parts powder to honey. Result: the most luxurious spa-like skin treatment that will brighten and balance the complexion in one application. Skin is left toned, calm and pore less.

You can up your polish game by adding a little honey to your powdered face exfoliator for a gentle deep cleanse. French Girl Lait De Rose Vitamin C Polishing Wash is a gentle powder formulated with Kakadu Plum, a rich source of Vitamin C, to brighten and promote collagen production. white willow bark acts as an enzymatic exfoliator to lift impurities while the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of pomegranate extract protect the skin and promote healthy skin function. This exfoliator works well with purified water but works miracles when mixed with honey.

Superfood Ingredient No 2: Organic Yoghurt

Not just brimming with good bacteria for the gut, Yoghurt is a wonderful additive for your powered face masks to brighten and revive tired looking skin. Yoghurt is loaded with lactic acid, a natural form of alpha hydroxy acid that gently removes and sloughs away dead skin cells revealing fresh and renewed skin. This natural form of AHA does not irritate the skin like synthetics can, so it’s ideals for inflamed and sensitive skin. The brightening benefits of yoghurt on the skin come from the presence and zinc which reduces inflammation and balances excess oil. The probiotics present in yoghurt help destroy bad bacteria that cause pimples and acne.

The benefits of Yoghurts potent antioxidants, natural acids and minerals are amplified when paired with an all-natural powder mask formulated with a base of another superfood group – mushrooms! Dr. Alkaitis Organic Beautifying Maskis a collagen stimulating treatment powder with a base formulation of Dr.Alkaitis special Forest Mushroom Complex – a remarkable blend of four wild mushrooms, including Tremella mushrooms. Used in Asian medicine for thousands of years Tremella mushroom is known to retain moisture better than hyaluronic acid, giving skin a plump and supple appearance. Combined with antioxidant rich raw cacao and soothing raw oat buds this formulation when mixed with organic yoghurt is a dream for those looking to calm and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. It’s amazing for mature and dry skin as well pigmented and sun-damaged skin making it well suited to addressing the effects of the Australian climate on our skin.

For a real treat and skin boost we recommend mixing Dr Alkaitis Organic Beautifying Mask with organic yoghurt. Using equal parts mask: yoghurt (about a teaspoon of each) in a small mask bowl, mix to a smooth paste consistency. You can apply this easily with your fingertips or a mask brush. Leave on for 10 minutes. Not only does the yoghurt amplify the soothing benefits, the lactic acid content supports the cellular renewal, for brighter and more even toned complexion. Added bonus, the yoghurt keeps this mask from drying out, essential to keeping the mask active during treatment.

Pro-tip: you can add a drop of honey for a luxurious skin treatment.

Superfood Ingredient No 3: Strawberries

Strawberries have astringent and anti-inflammatory effects on the complexion due to the high levels of Vitamin C, whilst also being a natural source of salicylic acid- a natural gentle exfoliant. Why do we love a natural form of Salicylic acid? It’s an excellent pore-cleansing active that exfoliates the surface of the skin while clearing debris and excess sebum from the pores.

Create your mix by either blending your strawberries for a minute to form a puree or crush fresh strawberries in a mortar and pestle, combining a teaspoon of namari Staub and mix to create a paste. The acids, enzymes and grains of freshly milled hibiscus, whole fruit powders, Vitamin C and mineral rich clays work in perfect synergy to provide just the right amount of exfoliation and deep cleansing that doesn’t strip or damage skin.  Use your fingertips or mask brush to apply to the face and chest. Leave for 20 minutes and rinse.

Pro tip: at the 10-minute point mist with your namari TAU to boost the skin’s hydration and keep the mask from drying out.

Let’s talk Essential Oil Safety

There are endless DIY Face Mask sites on the net that promote the use of essential oils in DIY skincare. Please proceed with caution here. One of the first skills a qualified Cosmetic Formulator learns and studies is the Dermal Safety Limits of Essential Oils. Essential Oils are truly an amazing gift from mother nature, they are powerful and potent skin-boosting compounds that transform the skin and hair, as well as mood and mindset. However, they require knowledge and caution as they can cause sensitization and toxicity when used in a formulation in an incorrect dosage, or applied directly to the skin. Clever Organic Skincare Formulators abide by a strict international dermal limit safety guide and understand the correct weight measurements and techniques to incorporate these powerful oils into a safe and effective formulation.

Masking is not only enjoyable, encouraging a moment of serenity and calm in the chaos of daily life, but it is great for the skin! We recommend an at home mask once or twice a week as part of your holistic skincare regime.
