Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde Resin: hardens and preserves nail polish. A known carcinogen, contributes to asthma, convulsions, skin reactions, abnormal fetal development and miscarriage.
Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP): makes nail polish more flexible and less prone to cracks and chips. Linked to reproductive issues, banned from use in cosmetics in Europe.
Toluene: keeps nail polish smooth and even when applied. Linked to nervous system disorders and birth defects/ developmental problems in children of mothers exposed during pregnancy.
Camphor: keeps polish looking glassy. Inhalation can lead to skin irritations, nausea, headaches and dizziness
Ethyl Tosylamide: used in nail polish as a plasticizer and film former. Can cause severe allergic reactions and in extreme cases liver damage. Banned from use in European cosmetics.
Xylene: prevents lumps in nail polish. Xylene vapors can cause eye and skin irritation, headaches, dizziness and nausea.
Benzophenone-1: prevents UV light from damaging colours. Linked to breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and has been found in human placental tissue. Many 5-free/ 7-free and 10-free nail polish brands still use this ingredient in their formula!
Phthalates: a solvent used to soften PVC plastics. These industrial chemicals can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reporductive system.
Parabens: preservative used in many cosmetics. Concerns that they act as endocrine disruptors with potential to mimic estrogen hormone and lead to reproductive problems.
